A Connected Island

A system of partnership between the State, the private sector and donors will guarantee not only the network development but also an open and non-discriminatory access to present and future operators.

 

Telephone systems

 

There are three main operators, including a local subsidiary of ORANGE and CELTEL International. The development of the fixed and mobile telephone network coverage is continuing its course to reach an annual growth rate of 40% in order to grow from 1 million users in 2006 to 3 million users in 2012.

 

National and international backbones

 

The national backbone will include reliable high speed lines serving the 22 regions as well as numerous access network via satellite.

In order to reduce further the cost of telecommunications in Madagascar, the government with the collaboration of the private sector will in the near future connect Madagascar via the EASSY and SAFE submarine fiber optics to the rest of the world.

SAFE (linking the Indian Ocean islands) Early 2008
EASSY (linking Eastern African countries) End of 2008
The improved infrastructure will:
  • establish reliable high speed international and local connections;
  • converge telecommunication technologies to carry voice, data, and images;
  • offer competitively priced access;
  • develop services such as call-centers, software development and the exploitation of the “last mile
